The One Question That Instantly Makes Patients Trust You More

Part 1 of my 5‑part series on becoming a more confident, effective communicator in everyday dentistry.

The Technique: The Check‑In Question

Most dentists unintentionally overwhelm patients. We explain too much, too quickly, in long uninterrupted blocks. Patients nod politely, but inside they’re thinking, “I hope this ends soon — I’m lost.”

The simplest way to break that pattern is to pause and ask:

“Does that make sense so far?”

This tiny question does far more than clarify understanding. It signals respect. It slows the pace. It tells the patient, “I care about you, not just the procedure.” And it transforms the interaction from a lecture into a conversation — which is where trust is built.

When This Technique Matters

  • Explaining multi‑step treatment

  • Talking to anxious or embarrassed patients

  • When you sense confusion but the patient won’t admit it

Example Dialogue 1

Dentist: “You’ve got a crack running through the back cusp here. If we leave it, it’s likely to spread.”

(Pauses)

Dentist: “Does that make sense so far?”

Patient: “Yes… like a crack in a windscreen?”

Dentist: “Exactly. And once it spreads, the whole thing becomes unstable.”

Example Dialogue 2

Dentist: “This area of gum infection is why the tooth feels tender.”

Dentist: “Does that explanation fit with what you’ve been feeling?”

Patient: “Yes, actually — that’s exactly it.”

Action Steps

  • Use the check‑in question once per explanation block

  • Watch the patient’s face — pause when you see uncertainty

  • Treat the question as a conversation, not a test
