“Curly suction” is a device you should try
Over my journey in dentistry there are very few pieces of equipment that I found to be essential but this is one of them. I called it the “curly suction” of the “snail”.
The fact that this item is both super cheap and extremely useful is a rare combination. A large bag of them runs to less than $100.
If you google “curly suction dental” you will find it straight away.
It is useful when you are doing a simple restoration or fissure sealant on the lower jaw. You use it when rubber dam is overkill.
The curly part retracts the tongue and then it goes under the chin which holds it firmly in place. If you put a cotton roll beside the curly part you have retraction, suction and a dry field at the same time. It takes a while to describe it but only seconds to utilise it.
If you haven’t tried it you really should buy a bag of them and test them out. I’ve often been surprised how few dentists have heard of this device.
